STEPH Twell booked her place for next month’s World Championships in London when she took her third successive British 5000 metres title in Birmingham at the weekend.
The Aldershot Farnham & District runner kicked past Dundee’s Eilish McColgan, a finalist in last year’s Olympics, with just under half a lap remaining and won by three seconds.
Three other AFD athletes were in the field. Emelia Gorecka, Twell’s immediate predecessor as champion, finished sixth, one ahead of Louise Small, while Philippa Bowden came 11th.
There were also four AFD runners in the men’s 5000 metres, which took place on Saturday. Andy Vernon finished second to Central’s Andrew Butchart, the Scot who was sixth in Rio. Chris Thompson came sixth, Ellis Cross ninth and Ben Bradley 14th.
In the 5000 metres walk for men, Chris Snook, who is the England Athletics under-20 walks champion, was fifth with a personal best time.
Amy Allcock finished fifth in the final of the women’s 400 metres.
