Bentley poised to beat Central to league title

CENTRAL A completed their Aldershot Table Tennis League Division One fixtures with a 9-1 trouncing of Ash A.

Phil Snelson and Paul Baker led the way with maximums, while Peter Millard won twice in support.

However, the week before the league title edged towards Bentley A with their 6-4 victory over Central B. Andy Mudie won all three for Bentley and Martin Townshend and Andy Appleby claimed doubles for Central.

Frimley A and Tennis C shared the points in a tight match. No player was unbeaten and there were doubles for Nigel Oh and Tim Ngyou (Frimley) and Paul Shakespeare and Ce Guo (Tennis).

Ash A just got the better of their B team, 6-4, with Nick Mills winning all three for the As. Dave Halfpenny (A team) and Ben Fereday (B) took two apiece.

A surprise result the previous week was championship contenders Tennis A only sharing the spoils with two-man Ash A. Dave Halfpenny was unbeaten for Ash.

Fleet A confirmed themselves as Division Two champions by whitewashing Tennis E. This time, David Joyce, Melvyn Lovegrove and Lawrence Dack secured the win, but throughout the season the contribution of Fallon Thompson has been immense.

Frimley B, meanwhile, are facing up to relegation after an 8-2 defeat away to Cody A. Keith Russell was unbeaten for Cody, with Peter Anthony and Phil Russell winning twice in support, but both losing to Frimley’s Vasco Correira.

Tennis J clinched the Division Four title with a 7-3 victory over Frimley E, Peter Bone leading the way with a maximum. Team-mate John Page won two, as did Paul Phelan for Frimley.

Crawley Ridge B will finish runners-up after overcoming Fleet C 9-1. Phil Garrett and David Marchant both took maximums and Richard Hornby won twice.

Tennis F moved back to the top of Division Three by splitting the points with their G team who are fighting to stay out of the bottom two. Peter Killick won twice for the F team, as did Charles Burton and Tushar Vaja for the Gs.

Cody D, with games in hand, may yet reach the promotion places. They defeated Crawley Ridge A 8-2, thanks to the efforts of Fan Lei (3 wins), Bob Fenner (2) and Dave Hewitt (2), the latter pair losing to Russell Gibbs.

Ash D beat fellow strugglers Fleet B 7-3, with Terry French securing a full house. Bob Murrell (Ash) and Rob Brook (Fleet) both won twice.

Tennis G forced a draw against high-flying Frimley D. Anthony Connelly was unbeaten for Frimley.
