Red card leaves Petersfield with little hope

ROYSTON TOWN 6, PETERSFIELD TOWN 0 (Evo-Stik Southern League Div I Central)

NOTHING seems to go your way when your bottom of the pile, as Petersfield will testify after their long trip to league leaders, and likely champions, Royston on Saturday.

The Rams, despite going a goal down, gave a good acount of themselves for 30 minutes, but then a harsh red card for Harry Giles left them with an impossible task against formidable opponents.

Matt Nolan scored the first of his four goals on 24 minutes, while Max Smith came within inches of curling in an equaliser for Petersfield.

The game changed when Giles, just back from suspension, was shown a straight red for a sliding tackle on Josh Castiglione, despite appearing to win the ball.

Nolan then scored either side of half-time and it was 4-0 when Scott Bridges shot low into the net from the edge of the area.

Substitute Rod Orlando-Young got the fifth with a fine individual effort and Nolan had the last word when he followed in to put away the rebound after hitting the upright with his initial effort.

Petersfield had the chance of a consolation goal when Chigozie Agwuegbo, another substitute, was felled in the area, but, just to make the visitors’ day, Joe Welch saved Agwuegbo’s spot kick.

Petersfield are home to Bedford this Saturday.
