Teen denies killing baby

AN Alton teenager has denied fatally injuring his six-week-old baby daughter at her home in Bordon in 2015.

Winchester Crown Court was this week told that the infant, Ezmai, had also apparently been “deliberately shaken” and had suffered rib injuries.

The baby’s father, Joshua Martin, 19, of Salisbury Close, Alton, has denied murder.

Mum Jemma Pethybridge, 19, returned from a shower to find baby Ezmai not breathing at her flat on New Road, Bordon, on June 28, 2015.

The BBC reported that her baby was found lifeless and had “milky vomit” coming from her nose and mouth.

During a 999 call, played in court, Mr Martin was advised to administer chest compressions while they waited for the ambulance to arrive.

Ezmai was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, before being transferred to St George’s Hospital in London, where she later died.

She had a head injury which had caused a subdural haemorrhage and severe brain damage. She also had bloodshot eyes, said to be “consistent with being shaken” and had eight bruised or fractured ribs, which were not damaged by the chest compressions, the jury heard.

The court heard Mr Martin “trashed” the flat while his partner and daughter were at the Guildford hospital, overturning furniture and pulling down curtains.

It was reported, after interviews with the police, that Miss Pethybridge said she believed Mr Martin was mentally younger than his age and had a temper.

The trial continues.
